Understanding the Problem
Early-stage startups were drowning in spreadsheets. Founders spent hours manually tracking expenses, struggling to understand cash flow patterns, and making financial decisions based on incomplete data. We needed to create a solution that not only organized financial data but actively helped entrepreneurs make smarter business decisions.
Phase 1: Research & Discovery (2 weeks)
We started by interviewing 15 startup founders across different industries - from SaaS to e-commerce. The pattern was clear: they all wanted financial clarity without the complexity. Most were using a combination of banking apps, Excel sheets, and accounting software, creating a fragmented experience that offered no real insights.
Key insights:
Founders needed predictive, not just historical data
Manual categorization was their biggest time sink
They wanted recommendations, not just reports
Phase 2: AI Integration Strategy (2 weeks)
This is where we decided to build in an AI copilot from the ground up, not as an afterthought. We mapped out how AI could enhance every interaction - from automatically categorizing transactions to predicting cash flow shortfalls before they happened.
We designed conversation flows where the AI could proactively alert users: "Your marketing spend is 40% higher this month. Should we adjust your Q3 budget forecast?"
Phase 3: Information Architecture (1 week)
We restructured the entire financial workflow around three core questions every founder asks:
"How much money do I have right now?"
"Where is my money going?"
"Will I have enough money next month?"
The AI copilot became the thread connecting these questions, providing context and recommendations at each step.
Phase 4: Wireframing & User Flows (2 weeks)
Instead of traditional dashboard layouts, we designed a conversation-driven interface. The AI copilot sits prominently, ready to answer questions or surface important insights. We created flows where users could literally ask: "Show me why my burn rate increased" and get visual, actionable answers.
Phase 5: Visual Design & Prototyping (3 weeks)
We chose a clean, modern aesthetic that felt trustworthy yet approachable - crucial for financial software. The AI copilot got its own distinct visual language with subtle animations to feel conversational, not robotic.
Every chart, graph, and data visualization was designed to tell a story, with the AI providing narrative context: "This spike in expenses correlates with your product launch - typical for this stage."
